Authorities are searching for a 24-year-old man suspected of drowning after he fell off his paddleboard into Alder Lake Wednesday afternoon.

A rescue operation to find a paddleboarder who went missing in Alder Lake on Wednesday is now a recovery mission as hours have passed since his suspected drowning, Carly Cappetto, spokesperson for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, told The News Tribune.

Authorities responded at 4:10 p.m. to the Pierce County lake for reports of a 24-year-old man who fell off his paddleboard into the lake, Cappetto said. The man, who wasn’t wearing a personal flotation device, went underwater and hasn’t resurfaced.

There were 24 units at the scene actively searching for the man, Cappetto said.

People are encouraged to avoid Alder Lake while authorities search. The boat ramp is open for emergency personnel only.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
