Tacoma might see thunderstorms later today.

According to a news release from the National Weather Service’s Seattle office, there is a 16% Tacoma will see a thunderstorm before 11 p.m Friday.

It might also be a wet day in the South Sound, with a 50% chance of precipitation in Tacoma, according to the NWS website.

“[There will be] a chance of rain before 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 5pm, then a chance of rain and thunderstorms after 5pm,” NWS said on its website.

Lakewood, Gig Harbor and Puyallup will see similar thunderstorm chances.

It is part of a larger pattern of scattered rain showers across Western Washington on Friday, according to the NWS release, with the highest chance of thunderstorms occurring in Snohomish and Skagit counties.

Brief thunderstorms moved across Tacoma on May 4, 2017. The Pierce County area could see thunderstorms this afternoon, according to the Nation Weather Service.

To stay safe during a thunderstorm, take this advice from the American Red Cross:

  • Seek shelter indoors, ideally in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor. Stay away from glass windows and doors, and don’t leave until weather forecasts say it’s safe to exit.
  • Avoid using devices connected to electrical outlets.
  • Avoid running water, because lightning can travel through plumbing and water lines.
  • Steer clear of trees, because tree falls are “the leading cause of death from lightning strikes.”

Thunderstorms can also cause power outages. To stay up-to-date on power outages, visit the Puget Sound Energy, Tacoma Public Utilities and Peninsula Light Company outage maps.
