Authorities rescued a 20-year-old man found unresponsive at Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom on Friday, the Steilacoom Department of Public Safety announced in a Facebook post.

At around 12:04 p.m., rescue crews received notice of a diver who suffered an emergency in the water and was found unresponsive, the post said.

Bystanders pulled the man to shore and began live-saving efforts. Responders transported him to the emergency room. His prognosis is “yet to be determined,” the post said.

Initial reports said the man was participating in group diving activities at the beach, the post said.

Steilacoom Public Safety, West Pierce Fire & Rescue and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Dive Unit responded to the scene.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
