Free summer workout classes return to downtown Puyallup, this time with rewards
Move Puyallup returns this summer, offering free fitness and wellness classes Monday through Thursday at Pioneer Park.
Launched in 2025 by Puyallup Parks & Recreation, Move Puyallup offers five workout classes each week, including dance, yoga, mobility, and strength training taught by fitness experts. The program spans 10 weeks and will continue until Aug. 31, offering 48 free fitness classes in total.
“The purpose of Move Puyallup was not only to get our community members moving, but to do so outside in one of our beautiful parks – maximizing the health & wellness benefits outdoor exercise has to offer,” city of Puyallup spokesperson Eric Johnson wrote in an email to The News Tribune. “Fitness programs can be expensive, but Move Puyallup provides high quality professional fitness classes for free, lowering the barrier to entry for all participants.”
Move Puyallup works with various professional fitness studios and instructors to help the community get moving.
- Mondays at 6 p.m., Wolf Heart Fit Co. teaches Family Fitness. Wolf Heart Fit Co. is a co-ed gym located in downtown Puyallup and offers functional fitness, personal training, and mobility classes for all fitness levels.
- Tuesdays at 9 a.m., Puyallup Parks & Recreation staff teach Zumba Gold. Zumba Gold is one of the most popular classes at the Puyallup Activity Center.
- Tuesdays at 6 p.m., Prana Hot Yoga and Body Sculpt teaches Yoga in the Park. PRANA is also located downtown and serves as a hot yoga, cycling, and body sculpt studio.
- Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Busy & Balance teaches Barre Burn. Busy & Balance specializes in pop-up workouts and on-demand classes designed for women with busy schedules.
- Thursdays at 9 a.m., Puyallup Parks & Recreation staff teach Gentle Yoga.
High Fitness will soon take over Busy & Balance to teach high-intensity modernized aerobics starting July 29. All classes are open to all ages and abilities, while Zumba Gold and Gentle Yoga are designed to be lower intensity and suitable for older adults.
According to Johnson, Puyallup Parks & Recreation is expecting about 150 to 200 participants per week after the first week saw about 215 participants. Last year, Move Puyallup had over 1,500 participants over the entire summer.
This season, Move Puyallup added a few new features to the program. Move Puyallup is working with local businesses to host after-class socials and offer discounts to participants. Last week, participants received $4.50 ice cream scoops at Lick Ice Cream and $5 drinks at Dulce Cafe. More socials are expected throughout the summer.
Additionally, participants of Move Puyallup also have the chance to win rewards after completing a series of classes through the new Move and Win punch cards. Participants receive a punch for each free class they attend and can win a Move Puyallup t-shirt after completing five classes, a yoga mat for ten classes, and a free one-month membership at Prana Hot Yoga & Sculpt or Wolf Heart Fit Co. for 15 classes.
Move Puyallup also launched a sister program this year, Walk Puyallup, where participants can join up to five scheduled walks or running opportunities per week. According to Johnson, the most popular walks so far have been Friday walks where residents join Parks & Recreation Park Ranger Chris Meland on guided walks through the city’s parks and trails, and the Saturday Women’s Walking Club, where women in the community can connect while discovering local trails and walking routes together.
Those interested in participating in Move Puyallup or Walk Puyallup can register for free online or by signing a waiver in person. Puyallup Parks & Recreation encourages participants to wear suitable clothes and to bring a water bottle.
