Afternoon collision blocks multiple lanes of State Route 7 in Spanaway

Update: The driver linked to the collision, a 17-year-old male, was arrested and booked into Remann Hall, Pierce County’s juvenile detention facility, on suspicion of reckless driving and felony eluding, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Original story: Multiple lanes of traffic on State Route 7 in Spanaway near the Roy Y were blocked Wednesday following a collision that began with a chase, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The state Department of Transportation reported the wreck at 5:13 p.m. on social media, later announcing that all lanes in the area were blocked.

At 5:50 State Patrol spokesperson Kameron Watts provided more detail on social media.

“A Trooper attempted a stop on a black Chevy Tahoe,” Watts wrote. “That vehicle then fled and the Trooper disregarded due to traffic volume. The SUV then collided with two other vehicles and the northbound lanes of SR-7 were blocked.

“That subject is now in custody. No injuries.”

Reached later by The News Tribune, Watts said the road was beginning to reopen. He explained that the trooper involved in the initial stop of the Tahoe decided a pursuit in rush-hour traffic would be unwise.

“Not necessarily the most opportune time to pursue a vehicle,” he said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
