Expect traffic delays as 6,000 bikers come through Pierce County this weekend

Roads in south Tacoma and Pierce County areas can expect to see traffic delays this Saturday as 6,000 bikers trek from Seattle to Portland.

Organized by the Cascade Bicycle Club, the annual Seattle to Portland Bike Ride will take place this Saturday and Sunday with routes spreading across various local roads and state highways. In a July 6 news release, the Washington State Department of Transportation advised motorists to pay special attention to bikers and to prepare for travel delays.

According to the press release, Tacoma and Pierce County residents can expect delays in the early morning Saturday on state Route 7. Additionally, residents in Thurston and Lewis counties can expect traffic congestion in the midmorning and afternoon Saturday on state Route 507.

The ride begins at 5 a.m. on Saturday in Seattle at the University of Washington’s E-18 lot. From Seattle, the route will stretch down through Kent, Auburn and Puyallup. Residents can find the full race route map, complete with rest stops and police security locations, on the CBC website.

Entering Puyallup, the route will go south on Fifth Street Southeast before wrapping around Kalles Junior High School. There will be a rest stop in the school parking lot. The route continues west on Seventh Avenue Southeast, north on Fifth Street Southwest, and east on West Pioneer.

At West Pioneer’s intersection with South Woodland and Pioneer Way East, the route will continue east on 72nd Street East.

Eventually, the route will turn south on Waller Road East until it hits Military Road East.

At this point, the route will continue east, through 160th Street East, up through Spanaway Middle School, through Military Road South and Perimeter Road, before heading south through Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
