Bicyclist on I-5 in Tacoma hospitalized after collision with vehicle

A bicyclist has been hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle in Tacoma on Thursday night.

According to a news release from the Washington State Patrol, the incident happened on northbound Interstate 5 and Pacific Avenue, near milepost 133.

The bicyclist was traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-5, the release said, while the vehicle, a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling north. The jeep struck the bicyclist.

WSP did not identify the age or gender of the bicyclist. The Jeep driver is a 43-year-old man from Seattle and had one passenger in the vehicle, a 39-year-old woman also from Seattle.

Authorities transported the bicyclist to a local hospital for injuries, the release said. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were involved, according to the release, and the cause is under investigation.

The roadway was shut down for nearly three hours, the release said.
