A teenager was shot in the leg at Tacoma’s Wright Park on Sunday evening.

According to Shelbie Boyd, spokesperson for the Tacoma Police Department, a group of teenagers gathered near the park, 501 S. I St., before officers responded to call that someone was struck by a firework.

When officers arrived at about 8 p.m., they found a teenager with a bullet wound in the leg. Boyd said officers suspect the gunshot was self-inflicted and possibly an accident. Boyd said the victim has been uncooperative with police and that there are no witnesses to the shooting.

The News Tribune asked how many teenagers were on scene. Boyd said the park was crowded but had no specific number.

Boyd confirmed that the teenager was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and that the department is waiting on video from the community to review the details of the case.
