Motorcyclist dies in Tacoma crash

A motorcyclist died Sunday in Tacoma after driving into the back of a stopped car, police said.

Mandel Abernathy, 57, was traveling south on Pacific Avenue about 1:20 a.m. when he hit the back of a car stopped at a red light at South Tacoma Way.

A witness told officers they were riding separate motorcycles about 25 miles per hour, but Abernathy didn’t appear to see the stopped car.

The Spanaway man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car was not hurt.
