Missing Boy Scout leader found after Mount Washington hike comes from Spanaway
A Boy Scout leader who went missing on a Mount Washington trail and was found safe over the weekend is from Spanaway.
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office on Monday identified the man as 51-year-old Boyd Sven Sluyter.
The Sheriff’s Office gave this account:
Sluyter’s group told deputies he had stayed behind on the trail Friday with a sick Scout while the others went ahead with a hike up the mountain.
On the way back down, the group found the Scout, but not the leader. They searched for Sluyter without luck, then called 911 about 8:30 p.m.
Crews searched for him until he was found safe about 3:15 p.m. Saturday.
He told deputies he had made sure the sick Scout was OK and then tried to find the rest of the troop. Because of fog and darkness, he got stuck on a steep slope, he said.
He decided to stop and make a fire, and waited until the next day, when he was found.
