Pierce County Councilman Doug Richardson announced Thursday he is running for re-election.
The Lakewood Republican was elected to his first term in 2012.
Vice chairman of the council, Richardson sits on the council’s rules and operations committee and its community development committee. He also heads the economic and infrastructure development committee.
In a prepared statement announcing his re-election bid, the former Lakewood mayor said he has worked consistently to balance the county budget, protect law enforcement funding and provide services to local military families.

Richardson also said he has worked to balance the rights of private property owners with protecting the environment when it comes to land use regulations.
The retired Army Reserve brigadier general previously sat on the Lakewood City Council from its incorporation in 1996 to 2012 when he was elected to the County Council.
