Federal Way woman killed in I-5 crash identified

A Federal Way woman who died last week in a crash on Interstate 5 in South King County has been identified as Irma Tranquilino Pena.

The 42-year-old woman was one of three people traveling south in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe when the driver tried to slow for traffic and lost control, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The SUV hit a tractor-trailer truck in the next lane, causing the big rig to roll and both vehicles to slide onto the left shoulder.

The 40-year-old Kent woman behind the wheel of the Tahoe was seriously injured and taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The other passenger, a 42-year-old Kent man, and two people inside the truck were hurt as well.

Troopers said Tranquilino Pena was the only one in the SUV not wearing a seat belt.

The accident happened about 11:30 p.m. Saturday just south of South 188th Street.

Southbound I-5 lanes were closed for nearly 12 hours after the crash.
