Rescue crews find 2 people seen in Commencement Bay near Point Defiance

Emergency crews searched Tuesday night for two people reported to be in the water by Point Defiance Park, officials said Wednesday.

Firefighters responded about 5:40 p.m., and several agencies searched Commencement Bay near the Gig Harbor Lookout at the park.

The Tacoma fireboat found and rescued a woman from an embankment in that area, Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke said.

It appeared the woman had fallen into the water, a man tried to save her, and the two got separated in the bay, Meinecke said.

Crews found the man on shore. He hadn’t been able to contact anyone because his phone fell into the water.

Both people were in stable condition, Meinecke said.
