University Place Police offering courses on community safety issues
The University Place Police Department will host a seven-week daytime academy for people to learn more about safety issues facing the city of 31,500 people.
The academy will start March 24 and run every Thursday for seven weeks, from 1 to 4 p.m. Presenters range from UP Police Chief Mike Blair to Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor.
Course outline and meeting dates:
March 24: Introduction to policing in University Place and course overview.
March 31: Protecting your property.
April 7: Patrol procedures and use of force.
April 14: Nine flashpoints in U.S. policing.
April 21: South Sound 911 communications officer Dave Lovrak and a K-9 demonstration with sheriff’s deputy John Munson
April 28: Legalized marijuana and its effects on public safety.
May 5: Personal gun ownership in the United States.
Classes are for UP residents, business owners, rental community managers/owners, students, retired professionals and UP city staff members/elected officials/commissioners.
