Cyclist in critical condition after being hit by car in NE Tacoma

A 59-year-old bicyclist was in critical condition Friday after a car hit him from behind on a Northeast Tacoma road Thursday, police said.

The crash happened just before 4 p.m. in the 4500 block of Nassau Avenue Northeast, south of Northshore Parkway.

“The driver didn’t follow the curve in the road and clipped the bicyclist from behind,” police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The cyclist landed on the car’s hood while the vehicle hit a curb and continued down the sidewalk before returning to the street, where the cyclist was thrown off, Cool said.

He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Detectives were investigating the crash and will give the case to Pierce County prosecutors, who will decide whether to file charges against the 33-year-old driver.
