The Central Meadow at Chambers Creek Regional Park will reopen to the public Wednesday, more than a year after it was closed to make way for the U.S. Open golf championship.
It is the last part of the popular University Place park to reopen following the championship’s June 15-21, 2015, run at the nearby Chambers Bay golf course.
The United States Golf Association began transforming the meadow’s vast green lawns into a tent city in March 2015. It eventually held the championship’s massive merchandise pavilion, media headquarters, food stalls and other amenities attached to the championship.
The USGA has been working to restore the trampled grass since the tournament concluded. Some areas might remained rope off for a bit longer as they continue to recover, Pierce County reported in a news release Friday.
