Feds OK sale of KPLU

Aug. 31 will be red-letter day for KNKX.

The Federal Communications Commission gave the go-ahead Tuesday to allow Friends of 88.5 to take over the Tacoma-based public radio station KPLU at the end of August, the group announced.

Immediately following the close of sale, listeners will hear the new call letters of KNKX.

The Friends group raised more than $7 million from 18,000 donors to purchase the station from Pacific Lutheran University. The goal was reached May 26. Additional contributions since then have built a fund to cover operations after the station changes hands.

The station chose KNKX as its new call letters last week, based on listener ideas.
