Opening date announced for $32M Pierce County rec center with mini golf, track

The Peninsula Metropolitan Park District’s (PenMet Parks) new $31.6 million Recreation Center will soon be open to the public.

The News Tribune previously reported that the new recreation center is at 2524 14th Ave. NW, where the Performance Golf Center once stood, behind the park district’s Administrative Building near Gig Harbor.

It encompasses a 58,000 square foot building and a 17-acre recreation campus, according to an April 24 PenMet Parks press release.

The recreation center plans to open on July 1, according to the release. Open gym passes and group fitness class passes are available — single-use pass prices range from $5-10 for in-district and $6-12 for out-of-district visitors depending on their age group. Family passes for the open gym are also available, with single-use passes priced at $10 for in-district and $12 for out-of-district visitors.

The project, which has been under construction since 2023, will feature an indoor turf field with goals for soccer or lacrosse, multi-court sports courts for basketball, volleyball or pickleball and a mini golf course. Visitors will also be able to walk or jog on an indoor track and enjoy various multi-purpose community and fitness rooms throughout the facility — 11 laps around the track is one mile.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on June 17 at 5 p.m. On June 21, there will also be a grand opening ceremony from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring music, food, activities and a tour of the recreation center.

Funding for the project came from PenMet Parks district residents, the Washington state legislature, private donations and a grant from the Recreation and Conservation Office, according to the release.
