Key Peninsula shopping center set to grow with new retail building
A shopping center on Key Peninsula is moving into the next phases of development, according to plans submitted to Pierce County.
The Lake Kathryn Village Shopping Center, 14220 92nd Ave. NW near Wauna, is home to Dollar Tree, Purdy Costless Pharmacy, Lake Kathryn Hero Ace Hardware & Grocery and more. An O’Reilly Automotive is close to opening on a separate retail pad at the site.
The News Tribune reported last year that Fusion Donut Café is planned for the site; the business did not respond to request for comment for this article for an update.
Plans filed with Pierce County reveal that’s not all, with Phase 3 and 4 expansion in the works, according to permit documents on file and a developer connected to the site.
Site-development documents show initial work concentrated at 14233 Lake Kathryn Lane NW, a 9,825-square-foot building.
The latest expansion is advertised on a billboard at the now-vacant corner of Lake Kathryn Lane Northwest and state Route 302.
Jim Newman of Newman Consulting told The News Tribune, “We are currently in the process of acquiring the necessary permits from Pierce County to enable us to begin construction later this year.”
Newman said via email in response to questions: “There are also plans, based on leasing, for a Phase 4 development on the same parcel consisting of two additional buildings totaling 13,000 square feet.”
He added, “Phase 3 development has interest from a coffee company, medical facility and teriyaki restaurant.”
Newman’s firm offers construction-management services and has been involved in Lake Kathryn Village master planning, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Future development, according to the master plan, would include more retail, office and a senior-care facility, he wrote.
Christina Rohila is a media representative for Pierce County Planning and Public Works. In response to questions, she said via email, “We are currently reviewing multiple applications associated with this project, including a site development permit and a SEPA determination.”
Rohila added, “In early May, staff completed an initial review of the site development permit and issued comments to the applicant requesting revisions.”
