Gig Harbor firefighters free a trapped driver and put out a chimney fire

Nov. 16 Driver trapped — Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One was dispatched to the 13000 block of Purdy Drive for a motor vehicle collision just before 10:00 a.m. Crews arrived to find one vehicle off the roadway. The driver could not exit the vehicle and had to be mechanically extricated. The driver was transported to the hospital. Washington State Patrol handled the investigation.

Nov. 17 Car vs. wall — Firefighters and medics responded to a car off the road at the 8000 block of Warren Drive NW around 1:00 a.m. They arrived to find the vehicle against a rock retaining wall with the horn blowing and the occupant out of the car. The driver was evaluated by medics and firefighters disconnected the horn.

Nov. 19 Two-car collision — Just after 2:00 p.m. firefighters and medics were called to a two-car motor vehicle collision blocking a lane near the 14000 block of Purdy Drive. All occupants self-extricated. The driver and passenger of one vehicle were evaluated by medics. The driver of the other vehicle declined medical aid.

Nov. 22 Chimney Fire

A homeowner in the 3600 block of 126th St. NW reported a roaring noise from the chimney shortly after starting a fire in the fireplace about 8 p.m. The homeowner used a dry chemical extinguisher. Firefighters arrived to find smoke but no flames in the chimney. They used dry chemical up the chimney and a thermal imaging camera to show the fire had not spread.

Nov. 23 Rear-end Accident

Firefighters and medics responded to the 6200 block of 40th St NW to the report of a two-car rear-end collision around 3:00 p.m. Crews arrived to find that the vehicles were blocking and handled traffic control around the accident. All drivers and occupants refused medical evaluation. Pierce County Sheriff’s Department arrived and conducted an accident investigation.

Nov. 24 Chicken Coop Fire

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One was dispatched to the 5800 block of 108th Street for a residential garage fire just prior to 10:00 p.m. The report stated that the fire started in a chicken coop and had moved to siding on the back of the detached garage. Firefighters extinguished the fire, which caused minor damage to the garage.

Nov. 25 Suspected Gas Leak

Occupants of a strip mall business on 51st Ave and Borgen Blvd. evacuated the building just after 9:00 a.m. due to the concern about a possible natural gas leak. Firefighters used a gas monitor, but could find no gas readings in or around the building The business owners reported the smell of gas over the last few days. Puget Sound Energy was on the scene and will be investigating.

Nov. 25 Wrong-way Crash

Multiple reports came in between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. stating that a driver entered State Route 16 the wrong way around Wollochet Drive and hit another car head-on. Crew arrived to find several vehicles involved. One patient was transported, others were evaluated, treated and released at the scene. Washington State Patrol was on the scene and handled the investigation.
