Firefighters lost the garage, but saved the house; ice on Narrows Bridge sets off chain collisions

Jan. 3: Two-car crash

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One was dispatched just after 1 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident approximately two miles north of Drummond on Crescent Valley Dr. NW, near 144th St. NW. Crews arrived to find a two-car blocking accident with all occupants out of the vehicles. All patients were evaluated and all declined transport .

Jan. 3: T-bone collision

Just after 2 p.m., firefighters and medics were called to the scene of a T-bone type collision around the 4700 block of Point Fosdick Dr. There were three occupants involved; only one wanted medical evaluation. Gig Harbor Police handled the investigation.

Jan. 6: Residential Structure Fire

Shortly after 4:00 a.m., Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One responded to a house fire on Ridgeway Drive in downtown Gig Harbor. The attached garage, of the approximately 1,800 sq. ft. rambler, was fully involved with fire when crews arrived. The roof of the garage collapsed, but the fire was limited to the garage. Although there will be smoke damage, the living space was saved. A single resident and his dog were home at the time of the fire. The resident was not sure if it was the smoke or the dog who alerted him of the fire, but they got out safely.

Jan. 8: Spin-out on the bridge

A call came in around midnight reporting a blocking accident on the Narrows Bridge. A vehicle spun out and struck the barrier, rendering it inoperable. Firefighters parked to block the HOV lane to provide scene safety. Two patients were assessed, treated and transported to the hospital.

Jan. 9: Icy chain collision

Returning from the previous call on the Narrows Bridge, just after 1:00 a.m., firefighters witnessed another vehicle spin out and strike the Jersey barrier. After firefighters parked to block the lane of travel, another vehicle slid on the bridge surface and struck the fire engine. Then a third vehicle lost control, striking the bridge barrier. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. A DOT de-icing truck was requested by Washington State Patrol.
