Windstorm keeps Gig Harbor firefighters busy

Jan. 11: Branch into power line

A report of a tree into the power lines on Mowitsh Drive on Fox Island came in around 5:30 p.m. he caller state that there were visible flames and sparks. Firefighters found a branch dangling across the power lines. The fuse on the pole had tripped, eliminating the hazard. The call was referred to Peninsula Light.

Jan. 12 Wires Down

Firefighters were dispatched to 12th Avenue and Island Blvd, Fox Island just after 2:00 p.m. for wires down across the road. Crews arrived to a tree fallen across the road, onto phone and power lines. Peninsula Light was already at the scene securing power. Firefighters shut down the intersection and assisted in cutting up the tree.

Jan. 14 Tree onto house

Just after 9 p.m., Gig Harbor Fire was called to the 7400 block of 74th St Ct NW for a tree that fell into a house. Crews arrived to find a medium-size tree that appeared to have broken off about 30 feet up. The top fell into the corner of a house, caused structural damage to the roof, and had punctured the sheet rock of an unoccupied room. Firefighters attempted to check the attic for further damage but were impeded by the HVAC system. They checked the adjacent rooms, as well as all utilities to confirm they were not involved. There were no injuries.

Jan. 15 Motor Vehicle Accident

Two vehicles were involved in a rear-end collision around 10:30 a.m. near the 4400 block of 56th Street. The engine was parked to block the scene and medics evaluated each driver, the only occupants of the vehicles. Neither driver required transport. Pierce County Sheriff’s Department was on the scene.
