Smoke, smells and sparks keep Gig Harbor firefighters busy

Feb. 7: Motor Vehicle Accident— Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One arrived just before 5:30 p.m. at the scene of a two car T-bone type motor vehicle collision on Jahn Avenue Northwest. There were no serious injuries.
Feb. 7: Power Line Down — A report came in around 6:30 p.m. about a power line down in a ditch with arcing and flames visible on Lombard Drive near 77th St NW. The street was closed, as the line was live and posed a risk. Peninsula Light was able to de-energize the line remotely, and Gig Harbor Fire remained on the scene to ensure all fire was out.
Feb. 8: Vehicle Fire — Around 6 p.m. a passerby noticed a parked vehicle with an engine compartment fire around the 3800 block of 57th St Ct NW. Firefighters arrived, extinguished the fire, and checked the nearby shed for possible extension.
Feb. 9: Car into guardrail — Firefighters arrived just after 3 a.m. at the scene of a vehicle crashed into a guardrail on Wollochet Drive near Artondale Drive NW. The vehicle was stabilized and no occupants were found. An investigation was completed by Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
Feb. 14: Smoke in a Commercial Structure —Firefighters responded to an alarm in a two-story commercial building at Stinson Avenue and Pioneer Way. Smoke was seen by employees at the top of a stairway leading to the second floor. The two occupants evacuated. No fire was found, but there was a breaker tripped. The HVAC system may have tripped the breaker; the business owner was advised to consult an electrician.
Feb. 17: Natural Gas Odor — Fire Department personnel noticed the odor of natural gas outside St. Anthony’s Hospital around 11 a.m. They requested help from Puget Sound Energey and hospital maintenance. Firefighters checked the area with a gas monitor and found readings within normal limits. The temporary smell of natural gas was traced to a malfunctioning boiler that had been shut off that morning.
Feb. 20: Roll Over Accident — A resident heard a large crash just before 2 a.m. around 38th Street and East Bay Drive. Crews arrived to find a vehicle on its top, with a power pole impacted, and the driver out of the vehicle. The driver was transported to hospital and Peninsula Light crews repaired the pole.
