Gig Harbor went for Biden in the primary, but Key Peninsula leaned to Bernie

Gig Harbor likes Joe, but the Key Peninsula is Bernie territory, at least according to results from the March 10 Democratic primary.

Former vice-president Joe Biden won 7,537 votes on the two peninsulas, Senator Bernie Sanders 4,285.

The figures are from the next-to-last count on Friday, March 13, of the 51 precincts making up the Pierce County portion of the 26th Legislative District, which covers both peninsulas. About 98 percent of the ballots had been counted.

Biden got his largest vote, 295, in the precinct which roughly covers North Gig Harbor.

Sanders did best on Herron Island. He got 164 votes there. He also dominated on the Key Peninsula, taking 590 votes there to Biden’s 434.

But Biden took Fox Island, 571 to 283. And he routed Sanders in the nine precincts that make up the City of Gig Harbor, taking 1,749 votes to Sanders’ 860. (The precincts overlap the city boundaries, so they include some county residents.)

Overall in Pierce County, Biden was leading with 59,268 votes, or a little over 40 percent, to Sanders’ 52,386, about 35.5 percent. Elizabeth Warren was a very distant third, with 10,725 votes, or about 7 percent. The total number of ballots cast for all Democratic candidates was 147,338.

On the Republican side of the ballot, with no opposition, President Donald Trump won 76,854 votes.

On the Peninsula, Trump got his largest vote, 339, in the precinct which runs along the east shoreline of Henderson Bay.
