Gig Harbor food bank switches to pre-bagged groceries, stops taking clothing, books and toys
Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank is offering clients pre-bagged groceries to reduce risk of infection during the coronavirus crisis.
“While GHP FISH is maintaining our regular schedule, we are providing clients with pre-packaged bags of groceries instead of self-shopping,” said food bank coordinator Jan Coen in a statement Wednesday. “It’s a good way to minimize contact with our volunteers and other clients.”
Clients will receive a mix of both perishable and non-perishable foods, as well as other grocery items as available, Coen said, although contents may vary.
The food bank is also temporarily suspending shopping for used clothing, home goods, toys and books, and are not receiving donations of those items until further notice.
To protect volunteer drivers, the nonprofit is also suspending transportation assistance that it normally provides to people needing rides to doctor’s offices or medical treatments.
Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula residents can assisted FISH by donating cash, non-perishibles in case lots, and toiletries. Donations may be made at 4425 Burnham Drive between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. most weekdays, and 3 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.
