A furnace and a chimney, both on fire, catch firefighter’s attention

April 17: Furnace fire — Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One was called to the scene of a residential fire around noon at the 6900 block of 76th St Ct NW. The caller stated that flames were coming out of the furnace vent. Firefighters investigated the furnace, turned off the breakers, and confirmed that there was no active fire. Crews helped the homeowner determine the source of the fire and recommended the power to the furnace remain off until a technician could service it.
April 17: Rollover accident — Firefighters and medics were dispatched to a one-car rollover accident on Harbor Hill near the YMCA around 5:30 p.m.. Crews arrived to find the vehicle had hit a tree, coming to rest on its top, separated from its frame, with the driver out of the vehicle. Gig Harbor Police Department was on the scene. Firefighters were on standby due to a leaking fuel tank. The driver was evaluated, treated and transported by medics.
April 17: Commercial building fire —Around 8:00 p.m., firefighters were dispatched for a commercial fire alarm at the 2600 block of Jahn Ave. Crews observed water flowing from the structure and light grey smoke upon their arrival. The building’s sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. Firefighters cut power to the building, ventilated the space and cleared the building using an air monitor. The Pierce County Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation.
April 18: Chimney fire — Flames and embers from a chimney fire were reported around the 4500 block of 17th St Ct NW at 5:45pm. Crews attacked the fire with hose and extinguisher to put the fire out. No extension was found. The resident was advised to call a chimney sweep before using the fireplace again.
