Gig Harbor firefighters tackle a second-story house fire and a collision with a bear

June 5: Ruptured gas line — Construction crews hit a gas line near the intersection of 22nd Avenue and 36th Street Northwest around 2:30 p.m.. When firefighters arrived, Puget Sound Energy was at the scene to shut off the line. Gig Harbor Fire crews took measures to control exposure and established a flow for traffic through the area. PSE crews were able to dig up the line and control the release.

June 5: Motorcycle Fire — Just after 7:30 p.m. firefighters and medics were dispatched to a vehicle fire at the 2200 block of Sullivan Dr NW. Crews arrived to find a motorcycle off the roadway with flames coming from the fuel tank. The flame was burning from cardboard placed inside the fuel tank. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters. Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.

June 6: House fire At 10:52 a.m., Gig Harbor firefighters were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 3800 block of 17th Ave. Ct. NW. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the roof line of the two-story home. The residents were safely evacuated. Focus of the firefighters’ attack was a shed, at the rear of the home next to the garage, that was heavily involved with flames. These flames traveled up the side of the attached garage and into the attic. The firefighters were able to limit the fire to the garage exterior and second floor of the home. This incident is currently under investigation by the Pierce County Fire Marshal’s office.

June 8: Collision with bear — A vehicle struck a black bear on State Route 16 around milepost 13 just after 9 p.m. Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One arrived to find the vehicle partially blocking the fast lane. The driver had self-extricated. Medics assessed the driver and provided transport for further evaluation and treatment. The Department of Fish & Wildlife was called and Washington State Patrol handled the investigation.

June 9: Car rollover — Firefighters and medics arrived to the scene of a single car rollover accident near 26th Avenue and Stone Drive Northwest around 6 p.m. According to a report, the vehicle struck the underpass and flipped, landing back on its wheels, blocking a lane of traffic. Crews positioned to secure scene safety, assessed the occupant, and turned off the engine of the damaged vehicle. Pierce County Sheriff’s Office investigated to determine the cause of the accident.
