Gas and vapor leaks keep Gig Harbor firefighters busy

June 27: Gas Leak — Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One responded to 4726 Borgen Blvd for a possible gas leak at Mod Pizza just before 8:00 p.m. The store manager reported a very strong smell of natural gas and evacuated the occupants. The gas oven reportedly was malfunctioning. Firefighters checked the business with a gas monitor and found no gas in the store. The decision was made to close the store until maintenance could fix the oven.

June 28: House Fire —In the 5500 block of 37th St NW, a homeowner woke up to smoke detector alarms and smoke inside the house around 6:30 a.m. The occupants evacuated and the homeowner began to use a garden hose to control the fire in the wall of the basement. Firefighters finished extinguishing the fire and checked for extension. The Pierce County Fire Marshal was called to the scene to investigate.

June 28: Vapor Leak — Fire Department units were called to 4726 Borgen Blvd for a reported natural gas leak at Qdoba around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the leak was not natural gas but rather a leak from the soda dispenser tank. Firefighters were able to turn the valve and stop the leak. The tank was left off until repairs can be made.

June 30: Small Brush Fire — Fireworks were found in the area of a reported brush fire just before 10 a.m. near the access road to Narrows Park. Park staff had attempted to put out the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher. Firefighters arrived and completed the task and overhauled the area.

July 2: Boathouse fire — At approximately noon, a citizen reported smoke in their neighbor’s boat house on Cedar Lane. Firefighters arrived and found the fire was out. The Pierce County Fire Marshal was called to investigate.

July 2: Rollover accident— A vehicle went off the road in a rollover accident and came to rest on its roof at the 15400 block of State Route 16 around 12:30 p.m. Washington State Patrol was on the scene. Both occupants got themselves out and were transported by Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
