Sheriff’s SWAT team will train at Voyager Elementary. Relax, it’s just a drill.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s SWAT team will conduct a training exercise on the campus of Voyager Elementary School on Wednesday, July 22, according to the school district.

There may be unusual activity, many Sheriff’s vehicles and loud sounds at the school between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., but it will a training exercise only and no cause for alarm, the district said. No children will be present, as the school us closed for the summer.

Voyager Elementary School is located at 5615 Kopachuck Dr NW., just east of Kopachuck State Park.

SWAT is an acronym for Special Weapons and Tactics, a team trained to respond to dangerous situations like hostage taking or active shooters. The Pierce County team includes 22 members from various parts of the department, including negotiators, snipers and experts in entry.

The team trains together twice a month and conducts a yearly three-day exercise on McNeil Island, according to the sheriff’s office website.
