Brush fires and crashes keep firefighters busy

August 21: Car atop barrier — Firefighters and medics were called to 11200 State Route 16 around midnight for a single vehicle into a barrier. Crews arrived to find the vehicle on top of the guardrail, facing the wrong direction, with fuel leaking and the Gig Harbor Police Department already on the scene. The driver was out and uninjured. Firefighters closed the affected off ramp for safety. Medics assessed the driver while crews plugged the fuel leak and cleaned up the fuel spilled on the roadway. Washington State Patrol arrived to begin their investigation.
August 22: Road-rage ramming
Around 6 p.m. Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One was called to the scene of a motor vehicle collision on 22nd Ave NW near 36th Street. The caller indicated that a vehicle rammed their vehicle into a guardrail in a road rage incident. The other vehicle left the scene. Firefighters blocked the scene for safety while medics attended to patient care. No transport was required. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department was on the scene to conduct an accident investigation.
August 24: Brush Fire
A caller reported gray smoke from the 500 block of 3rd Avenue on Fox Island just before 2 p.m. A homeowner had been cutting down bushes with a chainsaw when the shrub debris caught fire. The homeowner was extinguishing the flames with a garden hose upon arrival of firefighters. Crews completed putting out the fire.
August 24: Fireworks fire
Fireworks were reported to have started a brush fire just after 2 p.m. around the 6300 block of 156th St NW. The caller attempted to stomp out the fire when it grew in size. Firefighters arrived to a brush fire, approximately 20 by 15 feet. Crews quickly extinguished the fire.
August 26: Rollover Accident
Calls came in just before 4 p.m. reporting a two car T-bone accident that caused one vehicle to flip over. Firefighters arrived to find the accident blocking the intersection at Burnham Drive and Purdy Drive NW with one car on its roof and both drivers out. Crews blocked the intersection for safety and assessed the drivers. Neither desired transport for further evaluation.
