Fire calls: Drilled gas tank causes fuel leak; and a dust-off starts a car fire

Sept. 25: Cyclist vs. car — A person on a bike ran into the side of a moving vehicle around the 10700 block of Rocky Peak Place just after 5 p.m. Firefighters and medics arrived to find the bicyclist down on the roadway. Medics attended to the patient and transported to the hospital.

Sept. 27: Car fire — A resident at the 10900 block of 61st Avenue was spraying dust off of their running vehicle just before 10 a.m. when smoke and flames started coming from the engine compartment. They turned the vehicle off, called 911 and used a garden hose to extinguish the fire. Firefighters arrived, the fire was extinguished, the battery was disconnected.

Sept. 27: Fuel Spill — Gig Harbor Police Department was on the scene at the Gig Harbor Park and Ride just before 7 p.m. where the gas tank of a motor vehicle had been drilled. Firefighters arrive to find an active leak from under the vehicle with the owner attempting to plug it. The person that had drilled the hole fled the scene. Crews were able to safely plug the hole and use absorbent pads and other material under the vehicle and at the storm drain to absorb the fuel spilled. The Department of Ecology was contacted and Gig Harbor Police officers continued their investigation.

Sept. 27: Sideswipe collision— Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One was dispatched to a collision at Warren Drive and 30th Street NW around 7 p.m. Crews arrived to find the cars on the side of the road, each with missing driver’s side mirrors and no other obvious damage. Both drivers were out of their vehicles and neither needed medical care.. Law enforcement handled the accident investigation.
