Survey comments: City Hall atmosphere ‘toxic, corrosive’
Some survey comments
▪ “The mayor and city administrator do not really care about the employees. They micro-manage and don’t let their department heads run their departments. We have lost numerous valuable employees because of the way they treat people...”
▪ “Our mayor treats his employees very poorly and when he is confronted about it, he digs his heels in and fights, rather than listen and attempt to grow.”
▪ “I feel that the mayor’s and the human resources director’s performance are not only unacceptable, but toxic, corrosive, disrespectful, abusive, and hostile.
▪ “Many (employees) are walking on eggshells ... and are fearful that if they do voice their opinion or question the administration’s plans, they are put on the chopping block and pushed out.”
▪ “This administration is a ‘one way street.’ Toe the line or get out. Hence the number of employees that have left the city. It’s a toxic environment that is on a steady decline.”
▪ “We have had two city administrators in one year and largest amount of supervisor/ director turnover in last five years. We cannot keep skilled/ educated employees.”
▪ “We are just a number now. Training is discouraged (the mayor actually said that if you need training, you are stupid), networking with colleagues is discouraged, advancement is discouraged, professional opinions are ignored, reprimand is a daily occurrence.”
