Kids Corner: New Eagle Scouts from Fox Island troop are a bright light
In these times when we are so hungry for uplifting news, there was a beacon of light shining on Fox Island the evening of Dec. 6.
No, not the old lighthouse, but rather a ceremony awarding Eagle Scout status to three local lads. Max Walker, Curtis Carlson, and Mason Elliott have climbed the challenging trail of accomplishments to earn their Eagle Scout awards. Listening to the testimony of the people who supported them, mentored them, and worked with them was heartwarming.
Max said: “I am so thankful for the community that has helped me achieve such a tremendous honor. It couldn’t be possible without those in my corner helping me.”
To witness these success stories and to learn that this Troop 27 has generated eight Eagle Scouts in the last three years is heartening as we wonder where our future leaders will come from.
“Scouting has given me the life skills of leadership, philanthropy, volunteering, and wilderness survival/endurance,” Curtis said. “I have learned how to give back to my community.”
This troop has been on Fox Island since John Ohlson founded it in 1996. The current scout master, Steve Hubbs, like John, is one of those lifelong leaders in scouting who keeps this valuable venture alive as our youth and their families cycle through. We salute and thank them for their contribution to our society
“Earning my Eagle Scout is one of the best moments of my life,” Mason said. “It took years of effort, work, and help from my family.”
This Kids Corner column was facilitated by Hugh McMillan, as told to Jim Braden, the charter organization representative.
