A former Gig Harbor council member and realtor has announced his campaign for the state Legislature.

Spencer Hutchins plans to run for Rep. Jesse Young’s position as the 26th District representative, while Young runs for state senate.

“As a parent, business owner, and lifelong member of our community, I feel an obligation to step forward. Our state faces daunting challenges, and I am focused on working for a brighter future for us all,” Hutchins said in a statement.

Hutchins served on the Gig Harbor City Council for two years of a four-year term, during which he worked on issues like the Gig Harbor Sports Complex. He grew up in Gig Harbor and co-owns both Keller-Williams West Sound and Burnett Hutchins Real Estate Group.

He has been endorsed by Republican lawmakers in Gig Harbor including Young, state Rep. Michelle Caldier and former state Sen. Jan Angel who represented the 26th District in the Legislature from 2009 to 2019.

According to the Public Disclosure Commission, Hutchins’ campaign has raised more than $76,000 in contributions.

He is running on changing the Legislature, saying fiscal conservatism is a priority. Hutchins said citizens shouldn’t be forced to pay even more during the pandemic.

“Voters have consistently said no to new taxes, but the Legislature keeps stacking them up,” Hutchins said. “I will push to eliminate irresponsible taxes and reduce the burden on all of us.”

On community safety, Hutchins’ platform includes providing law enforcement more resources.

“Anyone can see that crime is on the rise, and we know why,” the candidate-to-be said.

The primary election will be held Aug. 2, and the general election will be held on Nov. 8.
