Fire damages Gig Harbor house, destroys car parked in the driveway

While a Gig Harbor fire did not injure anyone Friday afternoon, it damaged a two-story house and destroyed a car.

The Gig Harbor Fire Department told The News Tribune the fire began at 1:45 p.m. Friday near the 9700 block of Vernhardson Place. Around that time, the home’s owner, the only person on the property, walked outside and noticed smoke at flames. She called 911.

Firefighters arrived shortly afterwards and contained the flames about 2:30 p.m. Shortly after, they overhauled the property to make sure no embers could reignite the fire. At 3:42 p.m., the department announced on Twitter that the fire was extinguished.

As of Friday afternoon, the department did not know whether the fire originated from the car and spread to the house or vice versa. The house sustained significant damages, but parts of its structure remained intact. In contrast, the woman’s car was destroyed.

Once it is safe, the department will investigate the property to determine the fire’s cause.
