Expect traffic delays on the Fox Island Bridge this week. Here’s what you need to know

Pierce County Planning and Public Works will be performing an annual inspection of the Fox Island Bridge on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Drivers can expect delays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Pierce County officials advised drivers to travel with caution and allow extra time because the bridge will be down to one lane with alternating traffic.

Pierce County Planning and Public Works does inspection work on the bridge every August, Public Information Specialist Akiko Oda told The Gateway.

They use an under bridge inspection truck provided by the Washington State Department of Transportation, which is a specialized piece of equipment that allows crews to inspect the underside of the bridge deck, girders, bridge bearings, and the piers, Oda said.

Reports from past inspections are available at PierceCountyWa.gov/FoxIslandBridge, under the Bridge Inspections section.

With Peninsula School District starting a new school year the same day, Pierce County Planning and Public Works made the inspection start time 9 a.m. to accommodate morning bus routes.

There will be flaggers directing traffic at both ends of the bridge.
