Kopachuck Middle School evacuated after electrical panel fire Friday morning

Students and staff evacuated Kopachuck Middle School after a fire around 10:30 a.m. Friday.

After a surge protector caught fire in an electrical panel near the 300 wing of the building, the smoke caused fire alarms to go off, Danielle Chastaine, Digital Media Coordinator for Peninsula School District, told the Gateway.

The building was quickly evacuated and no one was injured, Chastaine said.

The fire was put out before Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One crews were dispatched to the scene, GHFMO officials told the Gateway.

Firefighters and one fire engine remained at the scene to check the air quality inside the building, GHFMO officials said.

Officials said students and staff would remain outside until the building is clear.

Staff writer Alexis Krell contributed to this report.
