A dumpster caught fire just before 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, behind the Purdy Shopping Center at 6700 Tyee Dr. NW.

Tina Curran, a spokesperson for Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One, was leaving Peninsula High School that night after an event when she noticed the fire, she told the Gateway on Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Upon arriving she found a single dumpster bin in flames behind NAPA Auto Parts, and no one around it.

“It was very close to the building itself and the fire started to smolder the siding along the backside of the building,” Curran said. “Which was an exposure risk.”

She said crews quickly arrived and got water on the fire and pulled the dumpster away from the building.

They also checked inside the building in case the fire had spread, which it had not. It was isolated to the dumpster, Curran said.

The Pierce County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.

On the Key Peninsula, a trailer caught fire Tuesday, Dec. 12, just before 4 p.m. Key Peninsula Fire responded to the scene just off 134th Street.

Anne Nesbit, a spokesperson for the fire department, said the fire burned a travel trailer .

There were no injuries, she said.

It took KPFD about 45 minutes to put out the fire.

The owners of the trailer thought it might have been an electrical fire, but no official cause has been relayed to KPFD yet, according to Nesbit.

The Pierce County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
