Snow leaves 6,500 without power west of the Narrows. School district calls for late start

Snow left residents west of the Narrows without power Thursday morning and caused late starts for local schools.

The News Tribune previously reported the South Sound is in a winter weather advisory until Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

In Tacoma, there’s an 18 percent chance that more than an inch of snow will accumulate by Friday, The News Tribune previously reported.

Power for residents on the Key Peninsula went out around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a post from the Peninsula Light Company on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Just after 4 a.m. there were about 6,500 residents without power, according to PenLight posts.

They dispatched crews to areas such as Carney Lake, Lakebay, Hallstrom and Herron Island, among others.

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, 1,060 people were still without power, according to the PenLight outage map.

At 9:30 a.m. PenLight posted that they estimated power would be restored in two to three hours on Tiedman Road Northwest and 80th Street Northwest. They expected power to be restored to residents on Wright Bliss Road Northwest in about four hours, and to Herron Island this evening. An estimated restoration time for Roberts Road Northwest was yet to be determined, PenLight’s post said, because crews were still on their way there.

The Peninsula School District sent an email to the Gateway just before 6 a.m. Thursday that said schools in the district would start two hours late.

“There will be no half-day preschool or out of district transportation,” Danielle Chastaine, spokesperson for the district, said in the email. “Buses will operate on regular routes, 2-hours later than normal.”
