Wreck causes heavy traffic on state Route 16 . ‘Don’t use Gig Harbor surface streets’

A wreck on state Route 16 caused backups Tuesday afternoon.

The Washington State Department of Transportation posted at 4:15 p.m. on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Expect heavy traffic on WB SR 16 in Gig Harbor this afternoon. A tow has been called to help clear this collision near Rosedale Street. Until then, the left lane is blocked.”

An update WSDOT posted shortly after 5 p.m. said: “All lanes open on WB SR 16 near Rosedale. Expect congestion through Gig Harbor and across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge until traffic clears.”

Gig Harbor police posted at 4:32 p.m.: “DON’T USE GIG HARBOR SURFACE STREETS. A tow truck is on scene at SR-16 at Rosedale and the problem should be clear soon.”

WSDOT’s traffic map showed stop-and-go traffic as of 6:20 p.m. on westbound SR 16 across the Narrows bridge.
