The spot where a shuttered bikini barista stand once stood has gotten a new life as a family-friendly coffee stop off of state Route 302.

Gig Harbor Coffee Co. had its soft opening at 16915 WA-302 on the Key Peninsula on Oct. 20. The grand opening is scheduled for Nov. 3, after they’ve had time to iron out the kinks of running the stand, business owner Tessa Turnbull told The News Tribune.

Besides coffee sourced from Gig Harbor-based Tana Coffee Company, the stand offers energy drinks, smoothies and various teas, Turnbull said. Food selections include sourdough breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, grilled cheese sandwiches and breakfast burritos.

Tana Coffee Company is an “amazing local roaster out of Gig Harbor that we absolutely love,” she said. “And they are a small business, so we’re supporting the small businesses as much as we can.”

The spot next to a 76 gas station and Friendly Food Mart near the intersection with Wright Bliss Road Northwest was once home to Lace N’ Latte’s Espresso, a bikini barista stand. Turnbull said she bought the building from another party who had bought Lace N’ Latte’s, turned it into storage and installed her own building to serve customers.

Hours for Gig Harbor Coffee Co. are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends. Starting in November, their weekday hours will be 4 a.m. to 6 p.m., said Turnbull.

Prices for their drinks range around $4 to $15 depending on the size, which ranges from 12 to 32 ounces.

She said she feels “really good” on her first day of business.

“It’s been positive feedback,” she said. “A lot more people have come through and posted on Facebook (about Gig Harbor Coffee Co.) than I anticipated.”

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department website indicates that Gig Harbor Coffee Company submitted applications for a food establishment and a general food service permit earlier this year.

Turnbull also owns Pink Gorilla Espresso, Smoothie and Food Truck, a bright pink food truck that sells coffee, smoothies and fried food like chicken strips and fries.
