What’s happening with new Chick-fil-A project in Pierce County? Here’s an update
Developers behind a proposed Chick-fil-A restaurant in Gig Harbor have moved forward in next steps with the city, and residents also can now weigh in on the project.
The city’s communication’s manager Lori Maricle, sent The News Tribune a brief update Sept. 11 in response to questions about the project. According to the update, the popular chicken franchise has submitted an application for a conditional use permit “and review can now begin.”
“This is the step where city departments review the plans for code compliance,” Maricle explained. “While this is now an active application, this is just the beginning of the process,” she noted.
The city also has set up a page online for people to find more information on the project and view the submitted rendering.
“We are not sure how many comments and redesigns will be required for the application to move forward for consideration by the hearing examiner, so we are hesitant to make any speculations on its feasibility,” Maricle added.
As reported by The News Tribune in July, a pre-application was filed with the city in October for a proposed drive-thru only, quick service restaurant on behalf of an anonymous entity, identified in a later scoping memo as Chick-fil-A.
The location is 5115 Olympic Dr. in Gig Harbor, across from Harbor Plaza Shopping Center and its Metropolitan Market grocery anchor, and just west of the Olympic Drive and Point Fosdick Drive intersection.
The city’s website about the project says the project calls for demolition of the current building onsite (Chevron gas station) and to replace it with a dual-lane drive-thru quick service site with 49 parking stalls and outdoor seating capacity for 44 people.
A public hearing will be held at a date to be determined over the site’s required conditional use permit. “City of Gig Harbor Hearing Examiner to make final decision,” the project page notes.
On Friday Chick-fil-A, in a response to The News Tribune, said via email that “We are always evaluating potential new locations ... . While we hope to bring new restaurants to the Gig Harbor community in the future, we do not currently have any locations to confirm.”
Residents can submit comments on the project to publiccomment@gigharborwa.gov or contact Nester Guevara, senior planner, at nguevara@gigharborwa.gov for more information.
