Crews respond to gas leak after vehicle crashes into boutique in Gig Harbor

Update, 6:25 p.m.: The bystander transported to the hospital after a pick-up truck rammed into a building Tuesday in Gig Harbor had non-critical injuries, based on reports from fire and medical personnel, Gig Harbor Police Chief Tray Federici said.

The driver of the vehicle reported no injuries but was transported to the hospital for precautionary evaluation, according to Federici. The crash occurred when the driver accidentally rammed into the building as he was turning into the parking lot.

“According to the driver, while navigating the turn into the parking lot, his feet became entangled between the accelerator and brake pedals, causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally,” a police department press release said. The driver also struck a stop sign and a parked vehicle before hitting the building. The injured bystander was inside the business.

The release also said that the driver, a 65-year-old man, was driving a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck and pulled into the parking lot from 48th Street Northwest. Police and fire personnel responded to the scene at 4763 Point Fosdick Drive at about 1:55 p.m. The crash “caused significant damage to the building and involved vehicles, as well as damage to a gas line resulting in a gas leak,” the release said.

Police do not suspect the driver of driving under the influence, or any crime, according to the release and Federici.

Update, 5:04 p.m.: One person was transported to the hospital following the collision, Gig Harbor Fire & Medic spokesperson Tom Wescott told The News Tribune in a follow-up phone call just before 4 p.m. He described that person as a “bystander” and said he believes the person was in the store that the vehicle hit. Fire personnel initially evaluated two people for possible transport.

He said he was unable to share further information about the transported patient’s condition.

The boutique was a standalone building, and authorities have allowed people to return to nearby businesses, he said.

Gig Harbor Police Chief Tray Federici left a voicemail for The News Tribune at around 3:10 p.m. reporting that police were at the scene. He said the gas had been turned off but didn’t immediately have further information.

Initial post: A vehicle crashed into a building in the 4700 block of Point Fosdick Drive Tuesday afternoon, leading to a gas leak and possible injuries, according to Gig Harbor police and fire personnel.

A Gig Harbor Police Department Facebook post provided updates after first reporting the incident just after 2:30 p.m., saying that Puget Sound Energy had contained the gas leak and emergency personnel were on-scene providing medical care while officers were investigating the wreck.

“Please continue to avoid the area and use alternate routes to allow first responders to safely complete their work,” the post said. “Additional updates will be shared as appropriate.”

Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One spokesperson Tom Wescott told The News Tribune via phone that fire personnel were called around 2 p.m. He said a vehicle hit a small boutique called Bloom. Wescott did not have information about what caused the wreck.

He said that fire personnel evaluated two people for possible transport to the hospital, but he did not immediately have updates on their condition or whether they were ultimately transported. It was also unclear if the two people were in the building or the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Authorities ordered the businesses on the right and left of the boutique to evacuate. Wescott said authorities are required to check the building for structural damage and then will determine when they can allow people back into the building and what they’ll need to do to resume operating the businesses.

He also didn’t have immediate information on what the source of the gas leak was, but said that most likely the vehicle hit a gas meter or a gas line, releasing natural gas.
