‘Major collision’ between U-Haul and motorcycle causes backups on SR 302

Lanes are back open after a motorcycle vs. U-Haul collision blocked state Route 302 near 94th Avenue Northwest Thursday afternoon.

The intersection is near the Lake Kathryn Village shopping center on the Key Peninsula.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office characterized the wreck as a “major collision” in a post on Facebook, encouraging motorists to take alternate routes if possible. The sheriff’s office reported that the Washington State Patrol is handling the collision.

The collision occurred just before 3 p.m. at milepost 13.25 and led to backups on the two-lane highway, according to an alert on the Washington State Department of Transportation’s travel map.

Key Peninsula Fire Department spokesperson Anne Nesbit said in a phone call just after 4 p.m. that the roads have reopened. The collision involved a U-Haul vehicle and a motorcycle, she said, and one person was transported in serious condition to a hospital.
