Popular Pierce County pizza chain with three restaurants adds a fourth

Puget Sound Pizza recently opened their first restaurant in Port Orchard, marking their first foray into Kitsap County along with their existing locations in Tacoma, Lakewood and Key Center.

Their newest restaurant replaces Dino’s Pizzeria at 1604 Bay St., according to the chain’s announcement on Facebook. Puget Sound Pizza owner Cory Cannell also bought the adjoining sports bar, Blue Goose Tavern, which serves burgers, steaks, salads and classic American fare.

“Come celebrate with us, grab a pizza, check out the tavern, and help us kick off this exciting new chapter in Port Orchard!” the business posted on their Facebook page ahead of their official opening June 19.

Puget Sound Pizza offers an array of handcrafted pies starting at $17.99 with fresh veggies and savory toppings, such as their Bandini (salami, minced garlic, red onion, pepperoncini and bell peppers), Beastmaster (pepperoni, salami, Italian sausage, bacon, diced chicken and Canadian bacon) and Manic Pesto (pepperoni, sausage, sun-dried tomato and artichoke hearts over pesto). They also feature a “pizza of the month” (currently Sausage Fest) and offer calzones, salads, sandwiches and gluten-free pizzas. You can also build your own starting at $13.99 for a 10” personal cheese pizza, with additional toppings starting at $0.75 on half or $1.50 on the whole pie.

Their St. Helens pizza has pepperoni, Italian sausage, black olives and jalapeños. “Nothing else even comes close to popularity,” Cannell said. Another popular order is their Pepperoni Lovers pizza, featuring three layers of pepperoni with cheese between each layer.

As of now, their menu in Port Orchard is missing a few items pending final approval from the health department, like their cheese balls and cheesy bread, but “we have 90% the same menu (as the other locations) right now, and soon to be 100%,” he said.

Cannell runs the business with his brother, Nick Cannell. Together, they have a combined 26 years of experience in the pizza business, he told The News Tribune. They make all their sauces in-house.

Blue Goose Tavern and Puget Sound Pizza share a kitchen and customers can cross over to both sides, Cannell said. The bar’s menu remains unchanged from the previous ownership and is different from the pizza menu; customers get both when they’re seated at a table.

It’s not unlike their other locations in downtown Tacoma and Lakewood, which each offer a bar with pull tabs and karaoke nights. The pizza chain’s smaller Key Center location, which opened May 8, is takeout-only, The News Tribune reported.

Puget Sound Pizza plans to extend the Port Orchard restaurant’s hours to serve breakfast once they get a few more staff on board, according to Cannell. For now, only the Blue Goose Tavern side serves breakfast, and they’re 21+ only. The sports bar is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, Cannell said. Puget Sound Pizza opens at 11 a.m. every day and closes at the same time as the sports bar.

Besides three other locations in Pierce County, the pizza chain also operates two food trucks. He hopes to have six locations by the end of next year, he said.

Puget Sound Pizza owner Cory Cannell also purchased a sports bar, Blue Goose Tavern, next to the chain’s newest location at 1604 Bay St. in Port Orchard, Wash.
