Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One Chief John Burgess was awarded the 2016 Chief of the Year award from the Tacoma-Pierce County Chaplaincy (T-PCC).

Burgess was chosen for the award for his encouragement and support of the county’s chaplaincy, especially following the unexpected death of Chaplain Chuck Elliott in June of last year.

A third-generation firefighter, Burgess began his career with Gig Harbor Fire & Medic One as a resident firefighter-in-training in 1987 and was sworn in as chief in 2011.

The award was presented during a ceremony April 15 at the La Quinta Hotel in Tacoma.
