Annual Galloping Gertie Half Marathon encourages friendly competition

The seventh annual Galloping Gertie Half Marathon returns this year with a new twist to the event: encouraging some friendly competition between Peninsula and Gig Harbor high schools.

Mark Caviness, chair of the event for the Gig Harbor North Rotary, said that the goal with the competition is to encourage more student participation and to support the schools.

“It’s fine to have a fun rivalry, a friendly rivalry,” Caviness said. “Our Rotary club decided to support this and give some of the proceeds to the schools based on their participation, whether it be volunteers or runners.”

The club has been keeping track of those registering and to what high school they are affiliated.

The school with the most event participants will receive the larger percentage donation from the event proceeds. Additionally, the school with the most participants will get to display the Lenny Trophy on their campus during the coming school year.

So far, there are quite a few people registered for the event, Caviness said, with registration up 54 percent from last year and the total number of runners expected at more than 1,000.

The event features the Galloping Gertie Half Marathon, a 10K run, a 5K run and walk and a Kids Run, with day-of registration opening at 6:45 a.m. The half marathon will cross the Tacoma Narrows bridge, but the courses for the 10K and 5K will stay on the Gig Harbor side and will not include the bridge.

It looks like it’s shaping up to be one of our best years, if not our best year — ever.

“It looks like it’s shaping up to be one of our best years, if not our best year — ever,” Caviness said.
