Minter Creek should be commended for program
The Gateway (March 2) article “Hope is the message for students at Minter Creek” Elementary School was uplifting. All children need hope for their future, as does our country.
Principle Robuck, the teachers and staff at Minter Creek Elementary should be commended for this very important work that they are doing for the positive development of our children.
There is another very important issue facing Minter Creek Elementary, and the health of our children attending that school. On several occasions, when I picked up my grandchild after school, the “playground” and parking lot in front of the school smelled like the inside of a septic tank! This cannot be healthy for anyone! What are our kids playing in, and what are they breathing?
“My Hope” is that the school district will “fix it” as soon as possible.

More could have been done to stop fatal tree fall
Laminated Root Rot fungus is epidemic in our area, so why didn’t the “professionals” hired by the Heron’s Key flag and remove those trees affected?
Also, why does our local planning department allow such total clear cutting of the forest areas in the permitting process of these large developments? We all know that wind will cause some of these trees in the narrow buffer stands left to fall eventually. If you wish to know the answer, just follow the money as it all comes down to the bottom line when building such a project.
A 100- to 200-foot “buffer zone” and proper fungal-involved tree removal may have prevented this tragedy. For what Heron’s Key is charging their senior citizens to become residents, this and more could have been done.
