Peninsula star guard McLaughlin commits to Oregon State

Peninsula High School senior guard JaQuori McLaughlin is reverting back to the original commitment he made during his sophomore year: The Oregon State Beavers.

Peninsula’s 6-foot-3, 170-pound senior guard had committed to Oregon State early in his high school career, but de-committed after Craig Robinson was fired. McLaughlin made his announcement Friday afternoon on Twitter.

The recruiting road has been a winding one for the Peninsula star guard. Last year, McLaughlin committed to the University of Washington, but de-committed again, opening up his recruitment one last time. McLaughlin, a four-star guard, is ranked the 89th best player in the country for the 2016 recruiting class by 247sports.com, and the 14th-ranked shooting guard.

“The trust I built with (Oregon State coach Wayne) Tinkle and the players I will be playing with was a big part of my decision,” McLaughlin wrote in a text message. “And I feel so comfortable when I am in Corvallis.”

McLaughlin recently narrowed his list down to Oregon State, Wisconsin and Utah. The Oregonian reported that Tinkle had made a big impression by watching every one of McLaughlin’s games during a summer tournament in Anaheim, California.

“I definitely noticed it,” McLaughlin told The Oregonian in July. “He was at all seven of my games — the only coach that was at all my games, so I definitely noticed that. Obviously it means they really value you and want you really bad and want you to notice that.”

McLaughlin averaged 23 points, five rebounds and four assists last year for Peninsula.
