Plans for RV park with up to 6-month stays riling up some in Orting
The City of Orting has received an application to develop nearly 10 acres as an RV park.
The lot is intended as a short-term mobile home site, with stays no longer than 180 days, according to the project application.
The project includes plans for 86 RV spots on a 9.76 acre site at 201 River Ave. NE. Plans include parking for public use of the picnic areas and walking trails.
Orting residents shared their thoughts, and most of the 27 emails written to the city object to the project, according to records obtained by The Herald. Some felt increased traffic would negatively impact the neighborhood.
One resident, Karen Hintz, wrote to the city, saying she and her husband bought a home on the street for a beautiful, country setting.
“The 86 unit park would also allow campers to stay 180 days? That’s RV living for half a year,” Hintz said in an email to the city. “This is not a camping neighborhood, this a family neighborhood! Please do not approve this.”
Another resident, Sam Webster, agreed.
The Carbon River brings many to walk down the road, and some wander onto his property looking to get back to town or find their car, Webster said. An RV park, he wrote, would increase the amount of foot traffic.
“This is my greatest fear with a camping facility right next door,” Webster wrote in an email to the city.
A few supported the project, saying development is expected in a growing town.
Kailyn Shaw said the lot would be perfect for an RV park because it is within walking distance of local businesses. She also said the distance between the park and neighbors would likely be large enough for the RV park to be “low impact.”
The land was bought in 2018 for $255,000 by Darrin Jones, according to Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer’s Office.
The public comment closed Wednesday, but there will be an environmental review and another comment period in the coming months.
